About WSSN

Who we are

WEED SCIENCE SOCIETY OF NIGERIA

The Weed Science Society of Nigeria (WSSN) started as the “Weed Science Group,” comprising three eminent scientists: K. Moody, A.A. Fayemi, and A. Ogborn. This group held regular meetings and consultations in 1970 at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan.

When other weed scientists like Imevbore, A.M.A. Komolafe, J.K. Egunjobi, G.W. Ivens, W.W. Sanford, S. T. O. Lagoke, and M. O. Oladokun joined the group in 1971, it became known as the “Weed Science Committee”.  The Committee formally became registered as the Weed Science Society of Nigeria early in the 70’s.

Annual Conferences

The first Annual Conference of the Society was held in Ahmadu Bello

University,Zaria in 1973.  Since then, the Society has kept strenuously to this

tradition, holding such a conference only twice in 1984 and 1993 due largely to

prevailing political crisis in the country.
